The Complete Story

Today, I had the privilege of spending time with Ms. Tan, a remarkable lady in her 80s whose warmth and spirit left a lasting impression on my heart.

Ms. Tan moved from Hong Kong to Singapore when she was just 13 years old. She has spent most of her life here, building a home and a family. Today, she and her husband both live at Sree Narayana Mission. Although they are in the same nursing home, they stay in separate blocks for men and women, so they don’t get to see each other as often as they would like.

Curious, I smiled and asked her, “Does your husband still remember you?”

Without missing a beat, she sat up proudly and replied, “Of course! I’m his wife. How can he forget me?”

The room immediately filled with laughter. It was such a simple moment, but it spoke volumes about the love they still share after all these years.

Ms. Tan told me she has one daughter, now in her 50s, who works as a beautician. She doesn’t have any grandchildren, and although her daughter visits whenever she can, Ms. Tan always tells her, “I’m okay. Don’t trouble yourself. Come when you have time.”

Those words stayed with me. Even in old age, a mother’s instinct is still to put her child first.

As our conversation continued, she shared that she had lost the vision in one eye after undergoing two surgeries many years ago. Despite the challenges she has faced, she never once complained. Instead, she smiled as she recalled the many jobs she had over the years, including selling rojak to make an honest living.

I also noticed that she would sometimes repeat the same stories and ask the same questions. Rather than seeing it as something to rush through, it reminded me that what many elderly need most isn’t an answer—they simply need someone willing to listen, again and again.

If Ms. Tan’s story has touched your heart, I hope you’ll consider making a donation. Your contribution, no matter the amount, helps provide daily meals, medical care, and essential support for elderly residents like her.

Together, we can remind them that they are still deeply loved, cherished, and never alone.
