For more than 16 years, Cik Zie and her husband have been feeding community cats in their neighbourhood.

Every evening, she prepares their food before heading downstairs at around 10pm to make her rounds.

She isn’t done when the cats finish eating.

At around 4am, she returns to collect the plates before sunrise, washes them, and prepares to do it all again the next night.

“Actually, I Don’t Really Like Cats.”

It might sound surprising coming from someone who has spent so many years caring for community cats.

But Cik Zie says she simply feels sorry for them.

Many of the cats she feeds were abandoned by their previous owners. When unsterilised cats appear, she also arranges for Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) to help prevent the community cat population from growing.

As she puts it:

“Not their fault also.”

The Costs Add Up.

Cik Zie estimates that cat food alone costs around S$1,500–S$1,600 a month.

Around 80% currently comes from her and her husband’s own pockets, with some support from friends, neighbours and cat groups. Veterinary bills can add to the cost when the cats fall sick.

For more than 16 years, they have continued to show up for the cats around them.
